Lucy Perez Obituary

This is a snapshot of a beautiful life, well lived. Luz Perez affectionately known to everyone as “Lucy” and to her countless students as “Mrs. Lucy,”  lived a full and abundant life. Her warm smile filled her face and her laugh preceded her when she entered a room. If you know Lucy, then you know she had several great loves of her life; God, her adoring husband of 49 years, her children, grandchildren, family, and her love for St Andrews and the many children she taught during her years there. Lucy passed away in her sleep on Tuesday April 14th at 2:40am, her home was filled with family when the Lord called her, just as she always liked it.

Lucy was born in February 1952 in New York City, she lived her whole life there alongside her parents and two brothers whom she loved greatly. When she was in her twenties, she met the man who would later become the love of her life. They met, when he picked her up in his taxi to take her to her college classes. They married in 1976, she became a step mother to three beautiful women, a grandmother and was later blessed with two children of her own. Lucy was a devoted mother, grandmother and wife right until the very end, her home filled with love, laughter and music. She was always happiest with her husband, and family by her side.

Not only a devoted mother, Lucy was also a career woman. She dedicated her life to the service of others. She started her career as a surgical nurse, she worked alongside doctors, comforting patients during the most vulnerable moments of their lives. In her late twenties, Lucy was diagnosed with Lupus, a disease that would eventually take her life. Her disease, cut her first career short, but instead of letting it get her down, she poured herself into her children and started volunteering at her church and school. That work eventually blossomed into more than a decade of service at St Andrews. Lucy taught Spanish to countless number of students, worked in the after school program, served as a Eucharist minister at church and did a number of other jobs. Serving at St Andrews, was one of the great loves of her life. She did this right up until her disease no longer allowed.

If you knew Lucy, you would never know she was fighting a silent battle every day. She was bright, bubbly and had a laugh that could be heard down every hallway. She loved to joke and prank, whether she was the butt of the joke or the one making it, she often said laughter was her medicine. She loved iced coffee, pancakes, and Sunday dinners. She loved Christmas and Easter and thrived on creating magic memories for her children. Her faith, her sheer iron will, and zest for life kept her going every day. For decades, she defied the odds of her disease, until she was finally ready to rest.

She leaves behind her husband Benito, her children Carmen and Benny, their spouses, her three adored step-daughters, their spouses,  her five adored grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She also leaves behind a brother and several nieces and nephews who she loved like her own.
