Lawrence Donald Ettelson

Lawrence “Larry” Ettelson, age 70, passed away on May 19, 2026, in Orlando, Florida. Born on March
17, 1956, Larry was the oldest son of Sue and (the late) Jerome Ettelson. He grew up in Chicago, a city
he loved deeply throughout his life. From an early age, Larry showed a natural curiosity and talent for
designing and building technical systems. While attending the Francis W. Parker School, from which he
graduated in 1974, he became actively involved in theatre lighting and technology, an experience that
helped shape both his future career and lifelong passions.
He went on to study at Carnegie Mellon University, where he continued to pursue his interest in
technical theatre and graduated in 1978. It was there that he met the love of his life, Connie Scanlon.
The two were married on September 13, 1980, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 45
years.
Following graduation, Larry and Connie moved to California, where they lived from 1978 to 1999. Larry
began his career with Berkey Colortran, working in lighting systems design. He later joined Walt Disney
Imagineering, where he found both a career and a calling. As part of the team responsible for ride
construction, Larry contributed to notable attractions including Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin,
Rocket Rods, and the Cars ride. Disney was more than his work—it was also his passion. He was an
enthusiastic collector of Disney memorabilia and delighted in attending Disney events.
The couple eventually relocated to Orlando, Florida, where Larry continued his work with Disney in
Engineering Services as a computer ride and show technician. He especially treasured his time at
EPCOT, where he played a key role in maintaining and preparing Test Track for daily operation. Larry
was valued by colleagues for his methodical thinking, calm demeanor, and talent for finding effective
solutions.
Larry and Connie also shared a deep love of baseball and the national parks. They often traveled
together to attend games during spring training, combining their passion for the sport with their
enjoyment of exploring new places. Larry experienced each destination through the lens of his camera,
capturing moments and memories with quiet joy.
Larry will be remembered for his easy-going nature, gentle kindness, and steady presence. He had a
way of making others feel at ease, offering valued encouragement and a reassuring smile. He leaves
behind a legacy of warmth, curiosity, and dedication.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Connie (Scanlon) Ettelson; his loving mother, Sue Ettelson; his
siblings, John Ettelson, Bill Ettelson (Karen), and Nancy Holceker (Elliot); and his cherished nieces and
nephews, Christine Ettelson (Luis Lanz Tienda), Margot Ruff (Joshua Ruff), Julie Coan (Joe), Dave
Ettelson, and Katrina, Elena, and Talia Holceker. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved
him.
