GEORGE WESLEY HOLLINS was born on August 30, 1944, in Saint Louis, Missouri,
alongside his identical twin brother, Gerard William Hollins Sr., to the loving union of
Maudella and George William Hollins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his
beloved brother.
George spent his entire childhood in the Ville neighborhood of Saint Louis, where he
attended elementary, middle, and high school. He graduated from Sumner High School
in 1963, proudly participating in the school band and football team. During his senior
year, a classmate—Arthur Ashe—introduced him to the sport of tennis, sparking a
lifelong appreciation. George continued his education at Harris-Stowe State College,
earning a bachelor’s degree in business. It was during his years at Sumner that he
began dating Angenette Woods, who would later become his wife.
In 1964, while attending Harris-Stowe, George became a proud member of Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Beta Nu Chapter—an affiliation that remained a meaningful
part of his identity throughout his life.
George and Angenette married in January 1966, and in 1967 they welcomed their
daughter, Michelle Denice. From the moment she arrived, father and daughter were
inseparable.
George built a long and distinguished professional career. He began at Combustion
Engineering in St. Louis before transitioning into business consulting. His first consulting
role was with Alexander Proudfoot in Moline, Illinois. He later served as a training
director in systems development at MPC Service Corporation. His consulting journey
ultimately led him to Shell Oil Global Solutions, where he served with dedication and
excellence, retiring as Director of Retention.
On February 16, 1980, George married Phyllis Hollins, and together they lovingly
blended their families. George gained two daughters, Lauren (deceased) and Felicia,
and Phyllis gained one daughter Michelle. Their union became a source of strength, joy,
and shared purpose for more than four decades.
Faith was a cornerstone of George’s life. He grew up in Antioch Missionary Baptist
Church in St. Louis and later became a long-standing, devoted member of First Baptist
Orlando. There, he served joyfully in numerous volunteer roles: Worship Center
volunteer, Connect Ministry table leader, special events helper, and co-facilitator
with his wife Phyllis, of the Christians in Action Life Group, since April
3, 2019. He also served faithfully on the Guest Experience team as an usher on the “B”
side until his passing. George was always ready to help, always ready to serve, and
always ready with a smile.
In the early morning hours of April 26, 2026, the bright and captivating light of George’s
spirit began to fade, and he quietly slipped into the loving arms of Jesus, his Lord and
Savior. Though his voice has been silenced, the memory of his joyful spirit, his warmth,
and his exuberance for life will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
George leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 46 years, Phyllis; his
daughters Michelle Dixon (LaRae) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Felicia Sheppard of
Houston, Texas; sisters-in-law Janice Moore of St. Louis, Missouri, and Marcia Lee of
Carlsbad, California; brothers-in-law Woodrow Dowd (Sharon) of St. Louis, Missouri,
and Nathaniel Moore of Veroli, Italy; and a special nephew, Gerard Hollins Jr. of St.
Louis, Missouri.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Matthew Sutherland (Adriane), Rakiyah
Watson (Devon), Ricardo Sutherland (America), James Rucker II, Alexis Bell
(Kameron), Brandon Hampton, Britney Redmon (Juan), and LaRae Dixon II, and nine
great-grandchildren: Jalen, Jazmine, Skylar, Kyson, Juan III, LaRae III, Nia, Bria, and
Isaiah.
George’s legacy continues through a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-
nephews, cousins, extended family, and countless friends who were blessed by his
presence.
